Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy is heading for Chelsea after the
2012 European champiactivated a £10.5 million buyout clause in the
French international's contract on Saturday.
Manager Harry Redknapp said QPR's west London neighbours had secured a
bargain in their efforts to sign a replacement for AC Milan-bound
Fernando Torres.
"He's got to be the cheapest buy of the century because when you look at
what strikers are going for at the moment ... everybody's eight
million, nines, 11s, 12s," he told reporters after his side beat
Sunderland 1-0 at Loftus Road without Remy.
"But there's nothing we could do about it. He had a buyout clause."
A QPR official confirmed the buyout clause was 10.5 million pounds, a figure that brought a smile to Redknapp's face.
"That's better than I thought, I thought it was eight-point something," he grinned.
Redknapp said he left the 27-year-old out of his starting line-up, for
what turned out to be the promoted club's first Premier League win of
the season following two defeats, because he felt he had no choice.
SPANNER IN WORKS
"We had a spanner thrown in the works at 12 o'clock today when I got a
phone call to say that Loic is leaving which was a massive shock to me, I
didn't expect that at all," he explained.
"He worked yesterday with the team and I never had any idea that he might be leaving.
"It wasn't a case of him refusing to play. He came in, and i had a chat
with him. I said 'Look, Loic, it may be difficult. I need 11 out there
today whose heads are completely on playing for QPR.' So I took the
decision," said Redknapp.
The manager understood the player's position, with Remy signing a buyout
clause when he first joined QPR before they were relegated in 2013 and
he spent last season on loan to Newcastle United.
"I'm not criticising him. He's gone to Chelsea, Champions League and
whatever ... it's a fantastic opportunity for the boy and it's difficult
to turn down," said Redknapp.
With Torres expected to join Milan on a two-year loan deal, Chelsea
manager Jose Mourinho wants another striker to compete with Diego Costa
and Didier Drogba.
Remy scored 14 goals in 26 league games at Newcastle and seemed to be
heading to Liverpool earlier in the transfer window but failed a
medical.
Redknapp said at the time that he could not understand Liverpool's
reasoning and that there must be another one because "you couldn't meet a
fitter lad".
Remy's departure leaves him looking for a replacement, in a side light
on firepower, with little time remaining in the transfer window and even
Championship strikers commanding eye-catching fees...

Torres set to join Milan on loan
Torres has endured a difficult time with the Blues since his then-British record £50 million move from Liverpool in January 2011.
The 30-year-old Spain international was unable to repeat his prolific Liverpool form in west London and has scored just 45 goals in 172 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.
He was believed to be Blues boss Jose Mourinho's third-choice striker behind new signings Diego Costa and Didier Drogba this season, and that drop down the pecking order -- he had yet to make it onto the pitch this season -- persuaded him to consider Milan's offer.
"Chelsea Football Club and AC Milan have agreed terms for the two-year loan deal of Fernando Torres to the Italian club," a statement on Chelsea's website announced.
"The move is now subject to Fernando agreeing personal terms with AC Milan and passing a medical examination."
Milan made their move for the former Atletico Madrid star after selling Mario Balotelli to Liverpool earlier this week.
Assuming Torres completes the move, he will surely go down as one of the biggest flops in Premier League history, given the size of both his reputation and the transfer and wages required to lure him from Anfield.
His memorable moments for Chelsea -- scoring a key goal in the 2012 Champions League semifinals against Barcelona and finally breaking his duck for the club against West Ham after 14 appearances -- were few and far between.
Instead, he will be remembered for lacklustre displays and a litany of shocking misses, including somehow blazing over an open goal in a defeat at Manchester United in 2011.
Only the likes of Andy Carroll, a £35 million failure at Liverpool, and Andriy Shevchenko, a £30 million misfit at Chelsea, have fared as badly as Torres in the Premier League era.
Torres has two years remaining on his £150 000-a-week Chelsea contract, meaning he is unlikely to play for the Blues again because he would be a free agent by the time his spell at the San Siro is over.
His move to Italy will bring the curtain down on a disastrous stint with Chelsea, in which he was a bit-part player as the club won the Champions League, the Europa League and the FA Cup.
Torres was a shadow of the player who terrorised defences across Europe in a Liverpool shirt and the raw statistics tell the full story of his Chelsea nightmare.
He averaged one goal every 3.8 matches for the Blues, compared to one every 1.8 matches in his four years with Liverpool, while each goal effectively cost Chelsea £1.1 million.
Just hours earlier on Friday, Mourinho had claimed Chelsea couldn't afford to lose Torres because it would leave them short of options in the attacking department.
His apparent change of heart means Torres will need to be replaced, with a move for Roma's Italian striker Mattia Destro a possibility before the transfer window closes on Monday.
Mourinho did admit he could understand if Torres, dropped by Spain for their forthcoming matches against France and Macedonia, wanted to leave given the criticism he has suffered at Chelsea.
"If he wants to leave, in the case he wants to, it's because he wants to try a new life, a new club, probably a new league," Mourinho said.
"So if he wants to leave, which until this moment I have not one single word about, I believe that is to try to be happier than he was in the last couple of years.
"This is a very human club in the way the club approaches this kind of situation.
"If he comes to us in these last couple of days, any possibility would be analysed by us as a club and the best decision for him."..
Chelsea win nine-goal thriller
The Brazil-born Spain striker cost Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho £32 million when he joined from Atletico Madrid in the close season and he provided a further illustration of his worth at Goodison Park.
The 25-year-old started and finished the scoring on an extraordinary evening on Merseyside, taking his tally to four goals in three games since his arrival at the club.
Everton's own big-money striker Romelu Lukaku, a £28 million acquisition from Chelsea, lined up against his old club, with another Chelsea old boy, Samuel Eto'o, starting the game on the bench.
Mourinho included Costa in his starting XI after he passed a late fitness test, having not trained in the latter half of the week due to a hamstring complaint.
And the striker showed no ill-effects to give Chelsea the lead after 36 seconds when he latched onto a through-ball from Cesc Fabregas.
Costa let fly with a low angled shot that Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard got a foot to but was unable to prevent going into the net.
Chelsea added a second goal in the third minute when Everton's appeals for offside were ignored by the officials.
Neat interplay between Costa and Brazil midfielder Ramires allowed the latter to slip the ball into Branislav Ivanovic, who had ghosted in behind the Everton defence and clinically dispatched a low shot past Howard.
American goalkeeper Howard was fortunate not to be punished by referee Jon Moss shortly afterwards when he handled outside the area as Eden Hazard chased down a long ball from Fabregas.
Everton improved as the first half wore on. Lukaku rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner and Sylvain Distin bundled the ball into the net, but the assistant referee had already correctly raised his flag for offside.
Everton pulled a goal back on the stroke of halftime when Seamus Coleman was released down the right flank and crossed for Kevin Mirallas, who got in front of Gary Cahill to glance a superb header into the top-left corner.
The goal ensured Chelsea were unable to rest on their laurels as a thrilling second half ensued.
Chelsea added a third in the 67th minute when Hazard cut in from the left and saw his low cross-shot inadvertently diverted past Howard at the near post by the sliding Coleman for an own goal.
But Everton refused to lie down and two minutes later reduced the deficit to one goal when Aiden McGeady jinked his way forward and threaded the ball to Steven Naismith, who stabbed a shot past Thibaut Courtois with his right foot.
Chelsea regained the initiative shortly afterwards with their fourth goal when Nemanja Matic arrowed a drive from the edge of the area into the bottom-right corner of the net via a deflection off Distin.
But Everton's never-say-die attitude saw them pull it back again with their third when a Leighton Baines free-kick from wide on the left picked out substitute Eto'o and he directed a clever header past Courtois.
Chelsea bagged their fifth goal of an engrossing contest when Ramires cut in from the left, played a neat one-two with Matic, and poked the ball past Howard.
And Costa made doubly sure that there would be no late drama when he seized onto a clever back-heel from John Mikel Obi, drew Howard from his line, and drove the ball into the net with his left foot...

I’m one of world’s best at number 10 - Ozil
Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has reacted to criticism of his
performances by declaring that he is one of the world’s best number 10s,
but is being played out of position.

Mesut Ozil
Ozil, 25, joined Arsenal from Real Madrid a year ago in a club-record £42 million ($69.7 million, 31.1 million euros) transfer, but he shone only fitfully in his first season at the Emirates Stadium.
Nevertheless, he finished the season as an FA Cup-winner and then won the World Cup with Germany, and he believes that if he is yet to impose himself in the Premier League, it is because manager Arsene Wenger plays him on the left flank.

Nevertheless, he finished the season as an FA Cup-winner and then won the World Cup with Germany, and he believes that if he is yet to impose himself in the Premier League, it is because manager Arsene Wenger plays him on the left flank.
“I’m one of the best
players in the world in that number 10 position. Fans, coaches, players
and everyone knows that my best position is playmaker. It’s different
playing on the left,” he told Saturday’s edition of the Daily Telegraph.
“When
I was in Madrid, I often played on the right. I enjoyed that because
I’m left-footed and I was able to cut inside to give assists and get
shots on target. On the left, it’s more difficult.
“The
opinions of fans are important to me and I’m happy they have such high
expectations of me. I have high expectations of myself.”
Wenger
had defended Ozil on Friday, comparing him to a virtuoso musician and
claiming that his contributions to Arsenal’s attacking play were
unfairly overlooked.
“People
are very harsh on Ozil because he’s a player who is easy with his play,”
said the Frenchman, ahead of his side’s trip to Leicester City on
Sunday.
“When you watch his
game back the next day, you think, ‘What a player.’ Everything he does
is intelligent and the timing of absolutely everything he does is
absolutely perfect.
“He’s like a guy who plays music with perfect timing. There aren’t many players like that.”
Despite his reservations about where he has been asked to play, Ozil said that he enjoyed working with Wenger.
“The
whole club can be proud to have such a fantastic manager with so much
experience, playing with style and doing so many great things for 18
years here,” he said.
“The
boss has always blooded youngsters, and helped make them into some of
the best players in the world. That’s also why I came here. I wanted to
develop myself further.”
