The
President, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Prof. Ngozi Nnam, on Saturday,
said daily consumption of milk daily holds several health benefits,
including the reduction of excessive abdominal fat, healthy teeth
development and maintenance of normal blood pressure.
Nnam
said this while delivering a lecture at an event to the mark the 2013
World Milk Day, organised by the FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria plc, in
Lagos.
The
professor of public health nutrition, said due to the nutritional value
of milk, it should be included in every diet as much as possible.
She
said, “The health benefits of milk are enormous. It promotes growth
because it is an exceptionally good source of protein that is readily
digestible and biologically available. It promotes cardiovascular health
because of its rich potassium, calcium and riboflavin contents. Calcium
can decrease bad cholesterol in the blood to reduce heart problems.
Milk helps build immunity because of its rich vitamin A content.
“It
reduces blood pressure due to the effect of protein, calcium, potassium
and magnesium. Milk consumption is associated with increased weight
loss particularly from the abdomen. Consumption of low fat dairy
products can help to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.”
In
his address, the Managing Director of FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria,
Mr. Peter Eshikena, said by celebrating the World Milk Day with the
theme, ‘Do More with Milk,’ the company was creating a platform for
exploring other ways milk can be used.
The
celebration started with the ‘Milk Walk’ with hundreds of participants
and it also served as the grand finale of the Peak Milk ‘Do More with
Milk’ Recipe Contest.
The
winner, Mrs. Adenike Nwaogwugwu, won a one-year supply of milk, while
the first runner-up, Ms. Vivian Ibe, won a six-month supply of milk.
