Emmanuel Adebayor could be on his way from White
Hart Lane. The Tottenham Hotspur striker has been the subject of a bid
from top Turkish side Besiktas.
Five goals in 24 matches for the club was not delivering on
the promise of the 17 goals of the previous campaign and it is widely
believed that the future of the Togo international lies elsewhere.
Ahmet Piper, the Besiktas club director, told Turkish news
outlet Fanatik: “It is certainly true that we are looking at the idea
of a transfer. We have made a serious bid for Adebayor. That, in turn,
has given us a figure for the player, which is slightly above the amount
that we imagined. However, making a signing as big as this immediately
is nothing but a dream. Negotiations always take a long time. I hope
that we will get a chance to have a meeting soon.”
Adebayor started his career with French side Metz and moved
to Monaco in 2003 and had a successful period there until 2006 before
being picked up by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. He led the front line
fruitfully at The Emirates where he scored 46 times in just over a
hundred appearances for the club.
His time at Manchester City, when the Club were developing
into major investors following the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United
Group, started well after signing a five year contract having being
signed for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £25million.
Effectively though he only had 18 months playing for City,
during which time he scored 15 goals in 34 appearances. The next year
and a half was spent on loan at Real Madrid and Spurs, before making the
permanent switch to North London.
It doesn’t seem feasible however that the player will
remain at the club this coming season and the Besiktas offer could well
be the first of many for a player who has the innate ability to flourish
once again at the top level.
With Spurs linked with the likes of David Villa and equally
importantly looking set to hang on to Gareth Bale for another season,
it seems that the club is already planning the new season without the
