Rain: Two buildings collapse in Lagos



Less than 24 hours that a four-storey building collapsed in Lagos State, killing one while several other construction workers were still trapped, additional two structures collapsed in Ikorodu and Bariga areas of the state yesterday.
National Mirror gathered that the collapsed three-storey building in Ikorodu was under construction.
However, no casualty was recorded as at press time as rescue workers have moved to the site.
Also, the alleged building collapse at Bariga, according to the Lagos Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, was a wall, saying it killed one person.
Meanwhile, rescue operation is still ongoing at the site of collapsed three-storey building, which belongs to Four Square Church at Bashiru Street, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos.
As at 10:am yesterday, one person trapped under the rubble was rescued alive.
It took the frantic efforts of the officials of the National Emergency Agency, Lagos State Emergency Agency, the police and others to rescue the man, who is one of the construction workers trapped in the rubble.
He had since been moved to a hospital for treatment, while the rescue operations for other workers continue.
Other affected workers were bricklayers, carpenters and labourers.

Immediately the building collapsed at Ojodu on Tuesday, one body was recovered while another person was injured.
Eye witnesses said that no fewer than 10 other construction workers were trapped in the collapsed building.
Commenting on the three collapsed structures, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development in Lagos, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, said government had not ascertained whether the buildings had planning approvals or not.
Besides, he said officials of his ministry had been instructed to investigate the incident.
President of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), Mr. Kunle Awobodu, said his members had moved to the sites of the collapsed buildings to ascertain the cause.
According to him, sample of concrete works on the buildings had been collected for laboratory test to know whether the building owners or contractors compromised standards or not.
Awobodu said what he personally observed was that the contractors erred in certain areas, saying one of the production processes had been compromised..
