Super Eagles’ winger Victor Moses was in the thick of action for Chelsea as the Blues came from a goal down to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, to guarantee for themselves a Champions League ticket. Moses was on from start but was pulled out at the start of the second half as Chelsea legend Frank Lampard grabbed the two goals to rubbish Bobby Tambling’s Chelsea all time goal record of 201. Moses has so far amassed a total of 22 appearances, 12 of which, he started and came off the bench 10 times, with a game left to play. He’s yet to add to his one-goal return in the whole season.
Also in England, Victor Anichebe was as usual on from start but did not finish as Everton beat West Ham 2-0 at home yesterday. Anichebe was pulled out in the 77th minute as Belgum international Kevin Mirallas’ brace settled the day for the Toffees. That was Anichebe’s 17th start of the season and his 234th overall league appearance for Everton.
In France, John Utaka was on target for defending champions Montpellier but was on the losing side as they fell 3-1 at 13th placed Bastia on Saturday. The former Portsmouth star drew his side level in the 31st minute after the hosts went into the lead in the 16th minute. However, Utaka’s goal counted for nothing for the defending champions. Utaka, who only returned three weeks ago due to thigh muscle strain, was substituted in the 58th minute. Utaka has so far played 28v times for his side, scored six times and entered the referees’ book four times.
Still in France, 2013 AFCONwinning star Ejike Uzoenyi finally made his debut for Rennes but was woefully on the losing side as they were bashed 4-1 by Valenciennes. The former Rangers winger, on a short term contract with the French side, was introduced in the last two minutes of the game. He had previously earned bench selection four times since he arrived in February.
In Germany, latest Super Eagles invite Joseph Akpala came off the bench in the 82nd minute for Werder Bremen but failed to score in their 1-1 home draw against Eintranct Frankfurt on Saturday. The former Club Brugge striker, who has had an injury-plagued season, replaced Turkey international Ozkan Yildirim in his third consecutive outing since he returned from a knee injury that need a surgery to correct. He has so far played 20 games, two of which he started but has managed just a goal.
In Italy, 2013 AFCON champion Onazi Ogenyi continued his super 90-minute performance for Lazio as he conducted the orchestra from the midfield to propel his side to a resounding 2-0 victory over Sampdoria yesterday. Onazi, who celebrated his first ever Seria A goal in their Wednesday’s 3-1 victory at Inter Milan, failed to hit the target as he notched his sixth start this season. He has so far made 13 league appearances and yet to get into the referees’ books.
Nigerian kid sensation Imoh Ezekiel is yet not on the score sheet in the champions playoffs as he failed to score in Standard Liege’s 4-2 home loss to Club Brugge on Sunday. With the loss, Standard have dropped to fifth position in the six-team table. However, it was Ezekiel’s only 90-minute outing for Standard so far in the play-offs, with two games remaining, having struggled with injuries. The former 36 Lion striker is yet to his 15-goal account so far in Belgian Jupiler League. He has so far played 29 league games for the multiple Belgian champions.
In Russia, Super Eagles striker Ahmed Musa returned to scoring ways for table toppers CSKA Moscow, hitting the target in their 4-1 away victory in the Moscow derby against Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday. Musa doubled his side’s score in the 25th minute after returnee Brazilain striker Vagner Love put the visitors’ noses in front after six minutes. Musa did not finish the game as he was pulled out in the added time. He has now hit 11 goals in the Russian Premier League, two goals short of Brazilian top scorer Wanderson. He has so made 25 league appearances. He has also been cautioned three times.
On the losing side was another Nigerian Victor Nsofor, who was on from start but was pulled out in the 66th minute. Nsofor has only managed two goals in 23 league appearances for the Railway men. He has also seen yellow twice so far.
In the Netherlands, former schoolboy international Uche Nwofor failed to score in VVV Venlo’s impressive 1-0 away victory at relegated Willem II on Sunday as the Dutch Eredivisie drew its curtains for the 2012/2013 season. Nwofor, who had been sidelined by injury and missed a number of games, was on for 90 minutes. He finished the season, netting eight goals in 26 appearances for his side. He has also seen red once and cautioned twice. Nwofor will now have to save his goals in the relegation/promotion play-offs as Venlo fight again to keep their top flight status.
In Turkey, hitman Kalu Uche has gone three straight games without scoring as his side Kasimpasa fell 2-1 at home on Friday. Uche was as usual on for 90 minutes. He was playing his 33rd league game this season. He’s still second on the scorers’ chart with 19 goals, one short of top scorer Burak Yilmaz of league leaders, Galatarsaray. He has also maintained a stainless record with no red and yellow cards.
Still in Turkey, both Promise Isaac and Yusu Ayila was on from start when both clubs Antalyaspor and Orduspor clashed on Saturday. It was Promise’s Antalayaspor that smiled home with a 1-0 win with Isaac failing to hit the target. Promise, who was on target last weekend, was substituted in the 69th minute. It was his 29th league game of the season, scoring eight goals. On the losing side, Ayila was also substituted in the 83rd minute as he notched up his eighth game of the season since he arrived on loan from Ukrainian top side, Dynamo Kiev. He has also scored once and cautioned twice.
In Ukraine, former youth international Haruna Lukman was on song for Dynamo Kiev, netting the lone goal in their 1-0 win over Illichivets’. The former Monaco midfielder , who hit a brace last weekend, settled the scores in the 17th minute after which he was pulled out in the 79th minute. The former U-17 World Cup champion has now netted five goals in 16 league appearances so far for the secondplaced side.
Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye played from the bench in the game, replacing Argentine striker Marco Ruben in 56th minute. Ideye, who smashed a Dynamo Kiev record two weeks by scoring 16 goals as a foreigner, has so far made 26 league appearances and has been in the referees’ books just twice.
In the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, Obafemi Martins was on target for Seattle Sounders as they demolished San Jose Earthquakes 4-0 on Saturday. Martins, who returned from injury that sidelined him for two games, came off the bench in the 55th minute, to put the icing on the cake for the hosts in the third minute of the added time. The former Newcastle striker has now scored two goals in four outings for his new side.
